Welcome to the Website of the
Dannevirke Scandinavian Club
New Zealand
Dannevirke, in Southern Hawkes Bay, is located in what was once known as the 'Seventy Mile Bush.' In the 1870s, this district was the heartland of Scandinavian settlement in New Zealand. Most of the former Seventy Mile Bush is now part of the Tararua District. Three of the country's original Scandinavian settlements (Dannevirke, Norsewood and Eketahuna) are in Tararua District, while two others, Mauriceville and Makaretu are nearby in Wairarapa and Central Hawkes Bay Districts respectively, while the sixth, the city of Palmerston North, is across the Ranges in Manawatu.
The towns of Dannevirke and Norsewood now actively promote their Scandinavian heritage, and the club is part of this ongoing connection. We hope that through this website you will learn something of us and our district.
