The immigrant ship England

The 'ship-rigged' England was under charter to Shaw Savill & Albion for all six of its voyages to New Zealand. It weighed 853 tons and measured 168.5 x 34.3 x 21.5 feet. It carried Scandinavians on its last two trips to New Zealand, these arriving in 1871 and 1872.

The second of these two voyages resulted in so much illness amongst its passengers that they became the first to be quarantined on Somes Island in Wellington Harbour. A major inquiry into conditions on the ship occurred. Those people later settled at Mauriceville.
