"Fading"

Hope sprang eternal at dawn
Light stretched out over the fields
A cloud would roll over
But soon it would always pass
And the morning light shone

As the midday sun rose, it was scorching
Its beauty acceding to its strength
Its nourishment to its wrath
Yet light was still there
As the afternoon sun shone

Now dusk came and the light was fading
Once, with this day, used to come
The new light of the nighttime sun -
But not this time
The sky turned slate as stone

It is evening, and all is obscured
Hope at dawn is gone
And once again, darkness holds the land
Just clouds and cold rain
And again, I am alone

"Accession"

The wars are over

(I do not quit,
I merely surrender)

In the battles, I fought nobly
Though I was ill prepared.
Effort and heart merit praise
But rarely assure victory

So much is gained
Yet the goal is lost

Perhaps what spoils there are
Are more valuable
Perhaps such a result
Is the greater good

Much may be gleaned
Yet one reality remains

I am defeated

Meditation on a Beach

Along the sandy beach walked I
The waves crashed
The sand washed away
And there I let out a sigh

Reminders of you all around
The reeds and flowers
The dunes and shoals
And no doubt the ocean's sound

And I try to get you out of my mind
Out of my heart
Into my past
But I'm always reminded, I find

I am haunted by your image
In my depths
In my soul
Just by virtue of your visage

Tell me it's hard to move on
Life's not easy
Love's not simple
Tell me it's hard to move on

I don't know what to do,
But tell me it's hard
To move on
Tell me that's true

"Fair warning
In the morning"

I am alive
I survive
Test me
Try me
C'mon already
I am ready
Give me what you've got
Tell me what you're not
Don't take pity
See who sits pretty
Let's go now
Show me how
Life's a fight
God - the winner's might
Sing His song
He'll make you strong
So better pray
For courage today

So is it that you challenge me?
Whatever it is, ready I'll be.
