It has often been said that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. When tragedy strikes sometimes we lean on others for support, sometimes we just dust ourselves off and get up, and sometimes we have to stop and help others before we help ourselves. This next award goes to someone who not only experienced a personal tragedy, but also held onto a positive attitude, which lifted others when he himself was down. On February 16, 2001, this individual was working at a construction site at Crawford Long Hospital. An unexpected accident occurred which crushed his foot. In the days that followed, doctors told him that he would lose his foot and part of his leg. All of his friends, family, and many co-workers rallied at his bedside for days. Personal tragedies affect people differently, but this stoic individual handled this crisis in a way that was nothing short of awe inspiring! Because he had such great family and friends around... the support was expected, but what was really amazing was how he in turn rallied his wife and family and constantly strove to help everyone accept what had happened to him! While most of us would feel the weight of crisis in dealing with a new handicap, this individual maintained a positive attitude and set an example we would all be very blessed to follow. For him it was not a set back. While the accident left him without part of his leg, his courage, outlook, and will to succeed was not damaged. Today, he is walking with a prosthetic leg after months of therapy. He is working full time as an Estimator for Action Electrical and Mechanical Contractors. His wife stays home and takes care of Mathew, who will be 2 in August and his newest edition, a baby girl named Taylor Rae, born April 23, 2002! His enthusiasm for life has doesn't stop there. He is planning to compete in the Metro Atlanta Baseball League next year. He is also planning to attend Southern Polytechnic University in the Fall to earn an Engineering degree. The class of 1992 is very honored to know and learn from Mr Richard Whritenour. |
