Coach Helton enters his 5th year as head coach of the Lady Cardinals basketball team. In his inaugural season as head coach, the team won the 8th Region Championship and earned a trip to the State Tournament. This was only the third time in the school's history they had made an appearance in the "Sweet 16" since 1975. Since then the Lady Cardinals have won four consecutive 32nd District Championships, all under Coach Helton.
During Coach Helton's tenure, the Lady Cardinals have been known for their full court aggressive pressing style of defense and run-shoot offense. For the past four seasons, Coach Helton's teams have finished in the top ten scoring teams in the state of Kentucky. Including last year's team being named the
#1 scoring team in the state, 75.2 points per game. Over the past four seasons, the Lady Cardinals have won 86 games, including a streak of making at least one three point field goal in 118 out of 119 games.
Since becoming head coach of the Lady Cardinals, Coach Helton has had 9 players sign letters of intent to play college basketball. Coach Helton has coached one KY All-Star (Erin Brown 2002) as well as three All-State players (Erin Brown 2002, Chelsia Lymon 2002 & 2004, Rebecca Gray 2004). Coach Helton's team is growing familiar with Top 20 rankings as well as a
USA Today ranking of last year's team. On January 7, 2004 the Lady Cardinals were ranked the #8 team in the South Region of the United States. Caoch Helton was also named the 2004 KHSCAA East-West All-Star coach, which combined the top KY seniors in the 7th and 8th regions.
Coach Helton attributes his success on and off the court to his faith in God. His wife, Tara Helton, is the JV coach of the Lady Cardinals. Coach Helton's parents, Wayne & Joyce Helton, still reside in Corbin, KY.
