The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research is working with the Sealord Group on diets that will improve the size, colour and taste of kina and make the roe more acceptable to the Japanese market.
Institute scientist Chris Woods says results so far open up the possibilities of land or sea based finishing farms to increase the quality and consistency of kina that has been harvested in the wild.
