South Hills High School is turning 10 this year! South Hills opened its doors to receive and hold its new students on August 10, 1998. Our brilliant school started as a freshman campus with a class of 378 students, and this inaugural class was the first to graduate as Scorpions in the spring of 2002. Did you know that South Hills High School was formerly a private school known as Trinity Valley, before Fort Worth Independent School District bought the property? Our school's growth was so rapid that there were as many as 50 portables on campus to house the students! In 2000, a bond election allowed an expansion to fit the needs of the students in a much more friendly environment. The expansion included an auditorium, 33 class rooms, the main office, along with band and choir rooms. These make up what is now known as the "G" building. Though 10 years seems like an extremely long time to most of us, there are actually members of the faculty who have been here since the beginning. We still count on Ms. Sherri West; Ms. Carla Vickers, a teacher in the language center; Mr. Connice Davis, one of the best math teachers; as well as Ms. Angela McCollom, a Spanish teacher. "The school has had its ups and downs, but we've had some really good times. Teaching and learning are my passion. I love seeing students do well," said Ms. McCollum. Continuing on with our list of teachers, we also found Sgt. Juan Amador, who is so proud to be here with us. "The school had only the "C" building. 70% of our students were Hispanic," he added. Ms. Nancy Butler and art teacher, Meg Rosenbach, along with Ms. Rebecca (Burks) Rodriguez, a cafeteria worker, join the list of faculty members here from the beginning. This is just part of our great school's history and how we got to where we are today. With the help of these veteran teachers and the many amazing teachers that have joined the Scorpion team along the way, we are headed in a great direction. The school is improving every day, and each day is another day in the history books that we as the students get the opportunity to write, so with this help, we will continue to make South Hills High School a great place to learn. Remember, you can continue to build what is becoming a great tradition! |
