TRAINING A RED TAIL
UNDER CONSTUCTION
5 MONTHS AGO I GOT MY FIRST RED TAIL, A FEMALE WEIGHING OVER 3LB 4OZ. I WAS SO HAPPY TRAINING MY FEMALE HARRIS HAWK. I FELT NOW WAS THE TIME TO MOVE ON AND TRY THE RED TAIL. I NEW IT WASN'T GOING TO BE AN EASY CHALLENGE. AFTER BUILDING A NEW AVIARY AND MEWS I GAVE HER TIME TO SETTLE IN. SHE USED TO BE  A DISPLAY BIRD, I OFTEN SAW HER JUST SITTING ON A PERCH WITH PEOPLE JUST STARING AT HER. SO WHEN SHE CAME UP FOR SALE I BOUGHT HER. I AM NOW STARTING HER TRAINING AND HOPE THIS WILL HELP YOU IF YOU DECIDE TO GET A RED TAIL. I HAVE STARTED MANNING HER UP, TAKING HER FOR WALKS AND GETTING HER USED TO HER NEW SURROUNDINGS, NOT JUST HER AVIARY, BUT EVERYTHING, CARS,BUSES,PEOPLE,DOGS AND ANYTHING ELSE. I HAVE A JAPANESE AKITA DOG WHICH IS FENCED OFF AND MY BIRDS ARE NEXT TO HER.THEY ALL SEEM TO GET ON FINE. WHEN WALKING AND MANNING A BIG BIRD LIKE THIS YOU WILL NEED A GOOD STRONG GLOVE, DOUBLE THICKNESS GLOVE FOR HER TALONS BECAUSE WHEN SHE GRIPS SHE HAS 40LBS OF PRESSUREIN HER TALONS WHICH COULD TEAR YOUR HAND APART. ANYWAY I STARTED TO DROP HER WEIGHT AND TAKING NOTE OF IT EVERY DAY , BIT BY BIT SHE STARTEDTO DROP HER WEIGHT.I SOON GOT A REACTION PUTTING HER ON HER PERCH AND SHOWING HER SMALL PIECES OF FOOD, SHE SOON JUMPED TO MY FIST. THAT WAS GREAT THE BOND WAS THERE. NOW FOR MORE MANNING SHE WAS STARTING TO TRUST ME.SO SHE NOW HOPEFULLY UNDERSTANDS THAT COMING TO THE GLOVE MEANS FOOD, SO AFTER ONE WEEK OF COMING FOR FOOD I HAD DROPPED HER WEIGHT TO 2LB 12OZ. I DECIDEDTO PUT HER ON THE CREANCE AND TRY AND FLY HER TO ME, AT THE SAME TIME TRYING NOT TO BE A BIT NERVOUS. I SHOWED HER FOOD ABOUT 1 AND HALF FEET AWAY. BANG SHE CAME FOR IT, SHE WAS LIKE A ROCKET. I WAS NOW MAKING GOOD PROGRESS, THEN FIVE FEET BUT SHE HAD A GOOD LOOK AROUND HER, SHE WASN'T TO INTERESTED SO I WENT A BIT CLOSER AND THEN SHE CAME TO ME SO WE CALLED IT A DAY. THE NEXT DAY THE SAME,HER WEIGHT DROPPED SLIGHTLY  SHE CAME RAPID AND I EXTENDED THE CREANCE TO 10 FEET BANG SHE CAME AGAIN. 15FEET THEN 20FEET AND SO ON , SHE LOOKED SO GOOD SHE WAS SO FAST LIKE A ROCKET AND MY HEART WAS POUNDING. IT FELT  SO GOOD TO SEE A BIG BIRD LIKE THIS COMING 20 FEET AND MORE TO ME. THE TRUST WAS NOW THERE I WAS FEELING GOOD, AND THAT WAS AN UNDERSTATMENT. THEN ON THE FRIDAY WHEN I CAME HOME FROM WORK I COULDN'T WAIT TO FLY HER, GOING INTO THE AVIARY I COULD SEE SHE WAS KEEN AND SO WAS I. SHE WAS NOW FLYING UP TO 30FEET SO I TRYED 40FEET AND CALLED TO HER TO COME, AMBER! AMBER! I CALLED HER TO MY FIST, SHE LOOKED ALL AROUND, I WONDERED WILL SHE COME OR WILL SHE HEAD FOR THE TREES, KEEPING MY FOOT ON THE CREANCE I CALLED HER ONCE MORE SHE TOOK OFF TOWARDS ME MY HEART RACING WITH EXICTMENT,40FT T CALLED IT A DAY AND GAVE HER A REWARD. THE NEXT DAY I WENT WITH KENNY TO FLY HER, A STRANGE PLACE AND SHE DIDN'T LIKE IT AND WASN'T KEEN. I GAVE HER A SMALL PIECE OF MEAT, SHE WAS WATCHING ME BUT ALSO HAVING A GOOD LOOK AROUND SHE COULD HEAR AND SEE HEAVY TRAFFIC GOING BY. I CALLED HER AT 10 FEET SHE CAME THEN 25 FEET SHE CAME THEN STARTED ACTING UP , SHE WOULDN'T COME AGAIN SO WE CALLED IT A DAY. IF A BIRD DOES THIS YOU SHOULD STOP, DON'T TRY TO WAIT AND WAIT CALLING HER. SHE MAY START TO DO THIS ALL THE TIME SO NO REACTION NO FOOD SHE WILL SOON LEARN, WE ARE MAKING PROGRESS. DURING THIS TIME ALWAYS REMEMBER TO PUT YOUR FOOT ON THE CREANCE LINE. IF YOU DON'T SHE COULD SUDDENLY TAKE OFF, AS AT THIS STAGE OF TRAINING  BIRDS OF PREY ARE EASILY SPOOKED. SO REMEMBER  WHEN TRAINING DON'T ALWAYS TAKE HER TO QUIET PLACES TAKE HER TO ALL DIFFERENT PLACES WHERE THERE IS NOISES.  THIS IS GOOD FOR THE BIRD AND YOU ALSO DIFFERENT PLACES , NOISES AND EXPERIENCES.
