This row was called "Whistle Dry," and had received its peculiar name from William Brownlie, who was himself afflicted with the byname "Tolley Wall," because he had kept a toll in his younger days. At the time of the erection of the row, William was carting the stones to the job, and because the proprietor would not adhere to the old custom of giving the workers a "foundin' pint," he (Wull) took upon himself the responsible duty of christening the building as described. The occupants were mostly weavers and tambourers, the first in the row being a widow named Mrs Stevenson. This row was called "Whistle Dry," and had received its peculiar name from William Brownlie, who was himself afflicted with the byname "Tolley Wall," because he had kept a toll in his younger days.
