Things to do
Bugs, lots of bugs. When they get hungry they glow. they look a bit like worms. Hey, they're glow-worms!
Go for the day trip and see Lake Te Anau first then descend into the Glow-worm caves. It's like the Milky Way in a cave, honest!

How about giving diving a go? You can get full P.A.D.I. accreditation from various sources but we qualified through Tawaki Dive. A small company that focuses on your safety and enjoyment. Once you have passed the intensive course you are rewarded with dives in Lake Te Anau and then embark on a trip of a lifetime to dive in Milford Sound itself. Try diving underneath Sterling Falls and don't forget to breathe.

Some drive to Milford Sound, others get a coach and some even hitch-hike. Why not try something completely different and catch a flight. In the off season flights can be inexpensive and you can even catch a lift one way (a hitch a ride back).
The views are spectacular and the landing in Milford is breathtaking (watch out for the sharp turn...hold onto your stomachs!).

Have you tried Kayaking? If not then you could do worse than taking a kayak for a ride on Lakes Te Anau or Manapouri. You can do this yourself or you can go on a package with a guide if you prefer. Both Lakes are relatively calm on most days but please ensure that you have all the necessary safety equipment.
When it comes to kayaking, you can also use Te Anau as a base for kayaking Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound. Both are available to you at a reasonable price.

With Queenstown only two hours away, the South Island of New Zealand opens up for you. Queenstown is a great place to visit in the Summer and, if you do nothing else while you are there, you must go to the bird sanctuary to see the Kiwis that are kept in captivity.

You also shouldn't miss the chance to go to the look out and see the panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables Mountain range by way of the Queenstown Gondola. In Winter, Queenstown becomes a Mecca for skiers and snowboarders with Coronet Peak, Cadrona and The Remarkables ski resorts all opening. Be warned though, Queenstown becomes incredibly busy at this time of year so if you are staying book well ahead.
