Good morning, good afternoon and good evening. Whatever time you're reading this... Hi. My name is Scott Cherney. If you've never heard of me before, don't worry about it. I've never heard of me either. That said, I have made a major accomplishment this year, being 2003 A.D.. My first book has been released by Publish America. Its name? I'm glad you asked. IN THE DARK A Life and Times in a Movie Theater What's it about? Again, thanks for asking. IN THE DARK is a movie memoir. It chronicles the misadventures of a self-proclaimed film geek, namely me, who grew up watching movies at the same time the movies were growing up themselves. You see, I realized that because I was born at the tag end of that period known as the Baby Boom, I became witness to the world in flux. I saw the transition from one era to another and was able to sample it all. Since I was a child of the cinema, I pretty much lived my life from one movie theater to another and I watched the world go by from the confines of a great seat on the aisle. I experienced the last days of the great Saturday afternoon matinees, complete with cliffhanger serials, fantastic cartoons and The Three Stooges.. I basked in the cinematic pleasures of Hammer horror films, spaghetti westerns and the Sean Connery Bond films. As I grew older, I, like so many other Americans, used the drive-in as an excuse for a crash course in sex education,on and off the screen.. When I finally got what I thought was dream job in a theater, little did I know it was about to turn all porno, all the time-and that was almost post-graduate work. I was also fortunate to grow up during that incredible period of filmmaking in the 1970s, as the screens were filled with new and innovative works by Altman, Coppola, Scorsese, Spielberg and so many more. Lest this just be the nostalgic ramblings of an old fart in training, there is much more to IN THE DARK as well. One chapter in particular entitled "Shots in the Dark" is my state of the cinema address where I slice, dice and puree today's exhibitors, studios, critics and audiences alike, leaving no prisoners. IN THE DARK: A Life and Times in a Movie Theater is a trip down Memory Lane, potholes and all. IN THE DARK is available for sale direct from the publisher at PublishAmerica.com AND from the world famous Amazon.com. Swear ro God! Or you check out BarnesandNoble.com, Borders.com or the one and only Booksamillion.com. That's right. Booksamillion. I thought it was a joke too, but there it is. AN EXCERPT FROM IN THE DARK: A Life and Times in a Movie Theater by Scott Cherney "One of the ancient rituals of youth I was fortunate enough to have experienced was the Saturday afternoon Kiddie matinee. The Kiddie matinee was a movie theater concept that had been around for years and I was able to come in on the tail end of it. Kiddie is an archaic term for child; therfore this was a special movie show just for kids, not cats. (If cats had their own matinees, what would they watch?) This was the spark that ignited my love for all things celluloid for this underage Cannes Film Festival was a crash course in the World Cinema. It was like a day-care run by Leonard Maltin. The matinees I remember were always packed to the rafters with tons o'cartoons. I'm talking GOOD carttons too for this was also a lesson in brand names. Early on, I was able to recoginize the quality of any given cartoon by the company that produced it. Warner Brothers delivered goos-and those goods were great, featuring the likes of Bugs, Daffy and The Road Runner (the original Mad Max). If it was MGM, you'd score big time with Tom & Jerry, Droopy and anything by Tex Avery. But if it was Universal...Woody Woodpecker...Andy Panda...or (shudder) Chilly Willy...The horror...the horror..." Copyright2003 Scott Cherney |
