Sometimes you need to travel with your Guinea Pig. The good news is with a few simple steps your little friends travel really well! The list below is for the typical auto travel which is mostly common sense.
One thing i learned from a brother-in-law who is a pilot: NEVER CHECK YOUR GUINEA PIG AS A PET THROUGH AN AIRLINE! Why? Its not heated properly, its very noisy, and lets face it most people view Guinea Pigs as disposable pets and they don’t care about them! The problem is they wont let you bring them on the airplane in a little kennel because their “rodents”. OK, it may not work for you, but when I had no choice but to fly with my Guinea Pigs I told the airlines they were kittens and lets say i was lucky the security guy wasn't so bright and I made it through!
Temperature
Just like at home and just like you...not too hot and not too cold.
Shade
Very important. Even though the temperature is just right being in direct sunlight can make things too hot! Constantly check to make sure the traveling cage isn't in the direct sunlight. Make sure you bring a few beach towels to place over them.
Draft
Direct air conditioning or open windows for more than a short period of time can make piggies succeptable to a respiratory problem. Try and keep the drafts to a minimum.
Food
Make sure they have plenty of water. This can be difficult on the road. We add a bit more lettuce to their diet while on the road to make up for the water they might not get otherwise. If food is ever a problem just order a salad at any fast food restaurant they seem to like it.
Attention
Check on your friends often it is the best way to avoid serious problems. Check their ears to see if they are too hot or cold and be aware that they cant tell you when they are uncomfortable.
