This comedy begins with Hugo Dugay, owner of Hugo Pool Maintenance Service, starting out early on this one very busy day. She goes about her day dealing with her odd family and odder customers. With addresses like Catatonic Pass Road, and a race horse named Quirky Gait, you can see this is meant to be silly. The characters interact, and what plot there is develops. Hugo Pool is a low key yet entertaining story full of laughs. This was well written comedy full of unusually subtle humor with a few poignant moments. There are even some interesting statements like. "Chances are taken, not given." It's very simple nature makes it easy and fun to watch even though it is not a good movie. Part of what makes this entertaining is the effective mix of seasoned actors. Alyssa Milano as the title character of Hugo Dugay was the critical cast choice. Alyssa's naturally sweet persona is exactly what is needed for Hugo to function as the center of the story. Much of the comedy comes from Hugo's actions set along side all these other flaky people, not to mention the flaky people interacting with the other flaky people. Malcolm McDowell does the over the top recovering addict daddy so as to be the one who supports the movie throughout the weak parts. The signature lines of some of the characters are only somewhat funny, but there is a battle between good delivery and repetition that doesn't always go so well. The locational scenes do add to the charm in some way. The ending is an uplifting wrap up even though it's ridiculous, but it is just a little comedy. Hugo Pool, a different kind of comedy.
