U-571 Official Site ***1/2 of **** Length: 115 minutes Credits: Writers: Jonathan Mostow (story & screenplay) Sam Montgomery (screenplay) David Ayer (screenplay) Director: Jonathan Mostow Cast: Matthew McConaughey: Lt. Andrew Tyler Bill Paxton: Lt. Commander Mike Dahlgren Harvey Keitel: Chief Klough Jon Bon Jovi: Lt. Pete Emmett Jake Weber: Lt. Hirsch A rather intense fictional thriller set in spring of 1942, Battle of the Atlantic. An American crew is sent out hurridly to attempt to capture the new Naval four disc Enigma encryption machine from the disabled German U-boat, U-571. Although more of a guy movie, the women who attended enjoyed it as well. The only gaf is the plane, you'll see. There is no wasted filler footage here. The realism and intensity in combination with the personal conflicts made for a good movie. The writers extensive research and interviews with surviving Navy men couldn't help but add to the film. Don't see it after the 7-7:30pm starting slot, or it may be hard to get to sleep. I got to see it on a 75 foot wide Ultrascreen which was quite encompassing, but not suitably clostraphobic for a submarine film. The THX sound was good, and the distant sounds of the depth charges added effect. There would be no way to replicate the sound of near by depth charge detonations. Go see it at a first run theater! Intense! |
