What do you think of John Dominic Crossan and the Jesus Seminar?

Hello Father,

I must first say I really enjoy you're website. I find it very enlightening and informative. I have a quick question I would like to ask. What do you think of John Dominic Crossan and the Jesus Seminar? I must admit I find some of their stuff interesting but I do take it with a grain of salt.

Keep up the Good work and have a merry Christmas,

J

Dear J,

Thank you for the kind words and apologies for being so slow getting back. I only know Crossan as a name. What I know about the Jesus Seminar is mainly thru media reports. Regarding the "search for the historical Jesus," that obviously was part of my theology study many years back (68-72). Since then I have read "Marginal Jew" by Meier. It is brilliant, altho somewhat overwhelming in its detail. The focus is what any educated person (Jew, Moslem, atheist, Christian) could agree on regarding the historical Jesus. Fr. Meier himself admits that focus is extremely narrow. For a believing Christian there is so much more we can know about Jesus by way of what the Catechism calls the Analogy of Faith.

God bless,

Fr. Bloom
