Border Stitches | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Border Stitches in Embroidery were used to accentuate a border or hem. The image to the right is part of a yellow on white pillow topper with a border stitced hem. Below are instructions for the four most popular: the Threaded Herringbone, the Cretan, the Chevron and the Shadow. |

THREADED HERRINGBONE STITCH Created by running contrasting thread through the zigzags of the herringbone stitch without going through the fabric beneath. Diagram shows method of looping the thread around the crossed ends of the stitch. CRETAN STITCH Made with the needle turned toward the center of the row, and the zigzags worked back and forth from right to left alternately as in catch stitch. Closed Cretan Stitch simply Involves setting the stitches closer together. They may be closed up tight if desired in the same way as in closed chain stitch. CHEVRON STITCH Involves herringbone stitch with a second step at each diagonal end. This consists of a perpendicular stitch marking each end. CHEVRON PATTERN Is an allover area of chevron stitch simply consisting of repeated rows of the stitch. Each end stitch can be elaborated with repetition, or it may be worked out with a contrasting color stitch to resemble smocking. SHADOW EMBROIDERY STITCH or CROSSED BACK-STITCH On the right side of the work this stitch resembles two rows of backstitch and on the wrong side it looks like a closed herringbone stitch. Slant the needle and take a backstitch, bring it out above and to the left; then work the line above in same manner. Work on sheer materials for shadow effect. |
