Crewel Work | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The term Crewel, simply refers to woollen yarn, and is used to describe any embroidery done in wool. It is also known as Jacobean, since it enjoyed it's greatest popularity in England during the latter part of the 17th century.
Crewel work is most noted for it's graceful, flowing design and variety of color combinations. Originally created to imitate the rich fabrics of the Orient, the work incorporates a variety of embroidery stitches, especially Back, Chain, Chevron, Cross, Fishbone, Long and Short, Satin, and Stem. Linen has always been the most popular fabric used, but any firmly woven cloth is acceptable, so long as it is done with wool.
