Hayate Ayasaki had to work to support his parent's bad habits since the age of eight, always moving from job to job since he is always found out to be underage. The experience does mean, however, that he of all characters possesses the most extensive practical knowledge as to how the world operates. Hayate's father refuses to get employed while his mother has been a compulsive gambler, which led to their bankruptcy. They abandon Hayate after selling his organs to the Yakuza to ease their financial burdens. With not many choices left to him, Hayate thought to kidnap someone to get ransom. He found a girl, Nagi Sanzen'in, and told her that he would kidnap her. However, Nagi mistook his words for his confession of love, so later he was employed as Nagi's new butler which become his only occupation when Nagi paid the Yakuza his parents' debts for him. From then on, he is to serve Nagi for up to 40 years or more. He was known for being the fastest newspaper delivery boy in the industry until he was fired for being underage. He is capable of chasing a car on a bike.
People around him, except for Nagi, Maria, Hinagiku and Isumi, are always remarking as someone who looks poor and seedy and has terrible luck. He believes that everyone hates him except children, though he doesn't think about children being any other than friends, including Nagi. He does genuinely want to impress Nagi for giving him this new job, but the person he has a crush on is the more mature Maria. As a butler, Hayate is capable of all aspects of housework and can even play the violin, but it is his ability in repelling attacks from almost anything, including butlers of other families, despite his bad luck that makes him what a "combat butler" is all about. He once demonstrated a skilled use of fire-arms (HK MG3) and is essentially invincible. In addition to looking poor and seedy, Hayate can also appear to be extremely feminine. This has led to him being forced to wear girl's clothing or cosplay in very girly roles, most of the time dressed as a cat-girl, usually at Nagi or Maria's behest. Because of this, he develop this female alter ego: Hermione Ayasaki (綾崎 ハーマイオニー, Ayasaki Hamaioni).
Since he rescued Nagi at a underground cavern from Gilbert, the terms of how to get Nagi's assets has been changed to defeating Hayate. This lead Gilbert to try to get the assets again by attacking Hayate directly but he failed miserably. Hayate is then forced to fake himself having amnesia while trying to avoid answering Ayumu who question him about how he feel for her and end up recognizing her as his master and landing himself into trouble from those who tries to regain his memories thought to have lost. He then meet the Superintendent of Hakuou Academy and get involved in a the school's Butler Battle Tournament to eventually fight against the Superintendent's own butler who manage to beat him once before the tournament. He did defeat the butler eventually, exposing her true identity as a young female child. This win lead the Superintendent believing that it is necessary to make him his own, sending her armies of mysteriously dark combat butlers to achieve that. Hayate is in for trouble without a shadow of a doubt.
Hayate went on a trip of discovering how a marriage meeting work with Nagi, Sakuya and a worried Wataru while heading to an inn with spa, discovering a murder and end up in the bathtub with Eight. He find two kids for Nagi to prove that she can take care of people and it did not take long for him to go out searching for the lost Isumi again after being harassed by Nabeshin himself. He had to face another mysterious dark butler that has hypnotized Nagi and to discover that defeating him did not let Nagi wake up from his hypnosis. He strive to help Nagi to remember who he is and manage to do it with a cake he specially made for her.
Hayate is forced to go out to get some reference on the latest trendy date spots teenager would go these days and is ecstatic to find out that Maria is willing to go with him. They had a great time despite the fact that they were tormented by Yukiji and the Student Council Trio eager to make them a 'real' couple. After they manages to shake them off, Hayate ended the day with Maria on the Ferris Wheel and a photograph together.
When found out that Klaus is determined to leave after he has failed in every attempt to win over Hayate in butler skills, he ask Maria what he should do to convince Klaus to stay. Maria ask Hayate to become Hermione and hopefully seduce him to stay but that failed when Tama interrupted. Hayate made sure that he beat the crap out of the tiger and discover that Tama is responsible to all this Klaus problem.
During Christmas Eve, Hayate found himself losing his own power and almost becoming Kirika's butler in one whole day. But with the help of his master, Nagi, and his antecedent, Akane Himegami, he manages to let the ultimate butler uniform acknowledge him and fall the giant snake by the name of Jormungandr down to its knees.
Due to a power failure, Hayate is forced to go to the power plant nearby and tries to switch the power back on while Nagi tries not to fear the darkness and Maria attempting to be by her side comforting her. Hayate soon realize that it is Sakuya who cause the power failure, and after being told, Sakuya attempt to atone her sins by going with Hayate. When Hayate find out that there is a onsen here, Sakuya suddenly went berserk and sent the both of them into the water. Even though he is wet and now terribly cold, Hayate continue to try to get his task accomplished. He is barely able to do that before he lost to the cold. But Sakuya manage to arrive with her bodyguards and rescue Hayate from certain death just in time.
During a vacation with Nagi and Maria, Hayate find himself back in time to get a chance to cure Nagi's indoor lifestyle and rescue her from the mafia. But after he manage to take care of the mafia, he went back to his time again. He does fulfill the promise he made to the little Nagi when he is back in time to stargraze with the Nagi he knows best.
