Pictures from Little Rebels Rabbitry
Netherland dwarfs are believed to have originated from Europe. About the early 1880s in England, there appeared in the litters of Dutch rabbits a white sport with red eyes, of a similar body type to the Dutch of that time, weighing about 1 to 2 kg. They had a round cobby body and a soft coat of fur. Through selected line-breeding, several more white rabbits with red eyes were obtained. They were shown at an Exhibition in Hull and then exported from England to Germany. These bunnies sure do fascinate the Germans. To obtain better quality bunnies, they bred polish rabbits to small wild rabbits. And the new creation is known as netherland dwarf rabbits. And at the same time, the agouti and black colored netherland dwarfs were discovered. Then the dwarfs are introduced in Holland. Until after the First World War,Blue Eye White made its first appearance in East Germany.Until 1930s, the only colors of Dwarfs are BEW and REW. However after the Holland Occupation, only 18 dwarfs survive. After the Second World War, netherland dwarfs came to Britain where fanciers set up a netherland dwarf club. Many noteworthy dwarfs are bred. And then the bunnies were introduced to America, Canada and Asia and so on.
