A STRANGE INCIDENT

The steamer 'Prince Rupert', was in the Indian Ocean, on its way to Australia. The captain of the steamer was an endearing old man called Hastings. Captain Hastings was due to retire the following year. One evening he was having dinner with the passengers when a storm broke.

Captain Hastings excused himself and went up to the bridge to take charge of things. He was there for thirty-six hours. The storm was fierce and the liner rolled with violence. The storm lessened at midnight, but the captain did not leave the bridge until noon the following day. He looked pale and tired which was not surprising. The First Officer, Bronson, took over the bridge with instructions to call the captain when necessary.

At 5 p.m., the captain called the ship's doctor, saying that he was feeling groggy. The doctor gave him something to make him sleep. He ordered that the captain was not to be disturbed no matter what happened.

Shortly before midnight, Bronson was drinking with the passengers when they saw the captain enter the lounge. His face was pale and tie was quieter. Otherwise there was no change in him. After a few minutes, he went out.

Bronson went to the bridge later, but did not see the captain there. On sending a steward with a message to the captain, he heard that the captain could not be woken. The doctor was called and after examining the captain, he confirmed that the captain had been dead for about seven hours due to heart failure.
