The "hat-check-girl" at BLITZ CLUB |
|||||||||||
Steve Strange gave me a job working the cloackroom at the Blitz. It wasn't ideal being stuck in a dark corner, but I needed the pennies. I was sure Steve was trying to demean me and when I became famous he couldn't resist telling the world, "Boy George was my cloakroom attendant." He forgot to say how much he paid me. I was always riffing through pockets and handI bags. Mostly people were too pissed to notice. A couple of times I was challenged, but was convincingly innocent. A certain amount of thieving was essential - everyone did it . A bunch of us would go into the local indian grocer's all dressed up and cause a commotion while Kim shoved bread and cheese up her bustle skirt Boy George - Take It Like A Man I always had an on-off friendship with George. He says that I gave him the cloakroom job to make him feel small and then I sacked him for nicking money from people's pockets. There was no way that when Blitz took off I gave him a job in the cloakroom to belittle him. I knew the people who lived in the Warren Street squat were desperate for money and if I could help them out I would give them a job, I'd just got lucky and I was trying to be kind, but he took it the wrong way.
