Building Feathered Wooden Kayak Paddles

After reading Douglas Alderson's letter on building paddles, I decided to try it myself. I really liked his method of laminating shafts, but I really wanted to build a feathered paddle shaft.

The instructions in the pages below contain exerpts in "quotes" from Douglas's original article.

Bent Lamination Feathered Shaft
Scarfed (Straight Lamination) Feathered Shaft
Bird's Mouth Hollow Shaft
Fiberglass Blade
Vacuum-Bagged Glass Blades
"Feather" Wood Blade

Here are the first two paddles I made using the instructions on these pages. The one on the right has a bent-lamination shaft with solid glass blades. The left one has a scarfed shaft with foam-cored glass blades.
