There is very little dispute that a bullet struck with great violence the
President's head during the interval between Z312 and Z313. The latter frame
shows an explosion of brain and tissue debris from the exit wound at the
anterior upper right skull, as determined by the HSCA Medical Panel.
Canning choose Z312 to study, as it's one of the clearest frames in the
Zapruder frame, and immediately precedes the frame showing the aftermath
of the bullet's impact. Using wound sites supplied by the HSCA Medical Panel,
Canning projected a trajectory from the skull outshoot, back through the
skull inshoot, and backwards from there into a cone that reflected a reasonable
margin of error. Canning demonstrated that the trajectory and slope could
include the "Sniper's Nest" window.
Subsequent analysis suggests Canning positioned Kennedy too far inboard.
There is no evidence that JFK reseated himself inboard; he would have to
shift his buttocks to get as far inboard as shown by Canning.
The map above demonstrates a shot from the Depository's "Sniper's Nest"
window at Zapruder frame 313 would have been about 6-degrees to the right
of the limousine's midline.
Sight-line analysis applied to the Moorman photograph (above), taken a split-second
after the bullet impacted the head, shows Kennedy was further to the right
than Canning had found. Six-degree trajectory bullet path added; other figures
positioned approximately.
I have added a grid (cyan) to highlight reference points along both car
rails in Zapruder frame 312 (above). Orange lines are applied across the
car rail plane and added accordingly to the limousine drawing. The positioning
corresponds to the Moorman photo-analysis. Just how far inboard JFK and
Connally were is subjective, but this interpretation suggests that the Kennedys
combined blocked a clear shot at Connally from the "Sniper's Nest"
window.
Connally seems clear of being struck by any bone and metal fragments that
projected along the bullet trajectory. The fragment found under Connally's
seat could have gone directly there. With a slight lateral defection, small
metal fragments could have easily struck the inside of the windshield, causing
the damage reported there. Mrs. Kennedy was roughly eight inches from being
struck herself.
