General Mountaineering History |
Situated in the remote interior of Mt. Mandalagan, the 5,262-foot Magkurog Peak (sometimes called as Danlog) possesses some of the remnants of virgin forest in Negros Island. Largely untouched by logging, its semblance of link to civilization is a trail that emanates from Pandanon, a settlement about 8 kms to tthe southwest. Several accounts point out the cold temperature and dense moss-covered trees in the Magkurog forest. Significantly, Magkurog is derived from the r.w. kurog which means to shiver. Since 1998, the Sinagarong Backpackers, the most ardent peak climbing group in Northern Negros, had assumed that Magkurog Peak is the highest point in Mt. Mandalagan. (Actually, the highest in Northern Negros is the 6,168-foot Marapara Peak.) Understandably, the erroneous assumption of the SB was based on the illusion of height which Magkurog projects from the vantage position of Marapara. In the perspective of mountaineering, Magkurog Peak despite of its significance has remained enexplored since the early 1980's when the Butlak-Banaag Mountaineering Society started exploring Mt. Mandalagan. For climbers, Magkurog is one of the few remaining Philippine peak waiting to be climbed by mountaineers. As a challenge, it presents problems in accessibility and assault route to pale in comparison the challenge of any major mountain in the country. |
