THE PEAKS OF
NORTHERN NEGROS FOREST RESERVE
(Negros Island, Philippines)
The Northern Negros Forest Reserve (NNFR) comprises two mountains - Mt Silay and Mt Mandalagan - situated in the northern part of Negros Island. Both Mt Silay and Mt Mandalagan are Halocene stratovolcanoes. Their young geological age account for their sharp features. Mt Silay has ten (10) major peaks and Mt Mandalagan has at least thirteen (13).
A large part of the Reserve is covered by second-growth forest, the remnant of heavy selective logging.. A few swaths are primary-growth forest, left for their inaccessibility and non-commercial timber. Despite of known intrusions by man in NNFR, the Reserve remains largely as an outback.
