B&M Transmission Cooler
Heat is one of the main reasons the 4r70w / AOD-E Automatic Transmission eventually fail. The B&M 24000 will help keep the transmissin up to 20 degrees cooler, extending the life significantly. The stacked plate design efficiently cools better than other tube and fin designs. The installation is fairly simple and costs under $60.
The Transmission cooler will use the radiator as a pre-cooler. Here, I have splilced into the return line to the transmission. The B&M comes with the brass fittings required, and teflon tape should be used when screwing into the radiator. An additional 4 feet of extra Transmission coolant line will need to be purchased to mount the Cooler more towards the front of the vehicle. The return line fitting does not fit on the original line, so a few options are available. Using a hack saw, the line may be cut, and coolant line fitted over it with a steel band to secure it in place ( as shown in this picture ). Or to retain a factory look and a better seal, the fitting included in the kit may be used, after cutting the hard line, and then using a pipe flaring tool to bring the line to original shape.
Once the lines have been ran, the cooler may be mounted. Keeping the cooler away from the radiator and in a constant airflow will maximize dissapation of heat. Here, I have chosen to mount mine in front of the power steering cooler, using the very same mounting holes. The cooler brackets had to be bent to mount the cooler in this position. The bottom is held on using existing holes below the ratiator, and brackets supplied with the cooler have been modified to hold it in place. Once mounted, the lines may be cut to appropriate length, and installed.
Another view of the cooler mounted in position, providing efficient cooling, and not so big as to block the airflow from the radiator. This installation should take under 1 hour to complete.
The B&M 24000 Transmission Cooler may be found at most auto parts stores, or can be ordered through Summit for $49.95. Additional Transmission Coolant line can be found at any auto store for about $1 per foot.
