I want to thank
Sherry Acorn for letting us know that Shirley Aycock Downs has moved to
Alabama. I’ve changed her information
and hopefully if anyone moves or knows of a classmate that moves you will let
us know. This information will
certainly make the 45th reunion so much easier for everyone on the
committee.
Janet Reckaway
Monte just had her 3rd Grandchild and expecting her 4th
in April. Congratulations and best
wishes Janet to you and your growing family.
It’s hard to believe that most of us are now Grandparents, we did grow
up after all. We’d also like to
congratulate Janet on her new mountain home they just purchased in North
Carolina. I know you will have lots of
good times when staying in the mountains.
It is with much
sadness that I have to let everyone know that Sissie Laurent Nelson passed away
December 13, 2006. Sissie had been ill
for quiet some time and is no longer suffering, for this I am grateful. She will really be missed, her smile, her
laughter and friendship are what we should all remember.
It is so odd to
drive by the high school and see no home section on the football field. There is only flat cleared land where we
once sat and watched the games.
Freddie and Gail
went to Arizona, can you imagine this?
They had plane tickets, hotel rooms and no game tickets! I hope everyone saw them on national TV,
yep, Don was flipping through channels, as he always does and there was Freddie
being interviewed about the Gators.
No, they didn’t get tickets but enjoyed their trip and all the
excitement surrounding the Gators winning the National Championship.
Don Stratton has
six grandchildren, glad that’s him and not me. It’s all I can do to keep up
with my four. Don’s son is a practicing
Chiropractor in Lakeland and his
daughter just married her junior high school boyfriend. Life is good for Don!
Dorman Boyd has
now joined Mary Lou Barnes Woods in becoming a great Grandparent. Of course we all know we, the Class of ’66
is great, just ask us. Congratulations
to both of them on this milestone in life.
Sachem LFBM (aka Michael McKereghan) writes that he is in his 33rd year of
teaching, mostly science and mathematics, but some other subjects, too.
And still standing! How about that?! But, to give a more complete picture, he
has slid along the ropes during some tiring moments - this he'll admit.
Who would have guessed that Mohammed Ali (i.e. Cassius Clay)
gave him two of his best skills for survival as a teacher: (1) rope a
dope - via slip and slide - don't always try to stand toe-to-toe and punch
it out with the students, and (2) The Butterfly Effect - via "float like a
butterfly and sting like a bee!"
There is a really good rumor going around Bartow that Citrus
and Chemical Bank wants to rebuild the football stadium and redo the entire
field, baseball field and softball field to create the George Harris Memorial
Sports Complex. If this comes to be we
will have a first class sports complex.
I’ll keep you posted!
Adrian “AJ” Jackson just filed his qualifying papers to run
for Seat 3 on the Bartow City Commission.
We all want to wish him the best, I know he will make a very good city
commissioner for Bartow.
Congratulations go to Gwen Williams Sutton on her retirement
from Mosaic after 29 years. She and her
cousin just purchased the Cork & Olive Store at the new Lakeland Lakeside
Mall. You go girl, enjoy your
retirement and best of luck with the business.
Our sympathy and love go out to Linda Taylor Nichols on the
recent loss of her Father.
If anyone is available on Friday April 13th
you are welcome to come walk with us
around Wilson Lake at Summerlin Park behind the high school for the Bartow
Relay For Life. SI Grads will have Camp
Hope set up where we will be fishing for a cure. Of course if you can’t join us you are welcome to make a donation
to our team. Donations may be made online at www.acsevents.org/relay/fl/bartow
and click on Dixie or contact me about where to mail your checks.
I want to thank everyone that contributed to this newsletter
and gave me something to write about.
Keep it up, send more news!
