Sid Kerner was born in Brooklyn, New York. He joined the Photo League in 1937, at the age of 17. There he became part of a group of photographers who believed that photography should reflect the times that they live in and that way document not only what was disturbing but also what was hopeful about society. For him the Photo League represented a way to combine his love for photography with his concern for people.
During World War II, he was with the 28th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron in Okinawa. After the war, he worked as a film cameraman. In 1953, he joined NBC-TV as a Lighting Director. In 1961, he went to ABC-TV in a similar capacity and retired in 1991. Throughout this time Sid Kerner was photographing, and at present is working on a series of abstract and surreal photos called "Off the Wall". As he says, "As I live, I photograph - and as I photograph, I live".
His work is represented in the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the New York Historical Society, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, the national Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the New York Public Library, Bibliotheque Historique de la Ville De Paris, Arquivo Fotografico, Camara Municipal de Lisboa, Portugal and in many private collections.
