History of Sifnos |
Traces of civilisation we can find in Sifnos as from the "Bronge Age"(3000-2000bc). Probably Cares were the the fist inhabitants of the island. Sifnos becomes the centre of the protocycladic civilization. |
The period of 2000-1450bc finds Sifnos to get lots of infuence from "Minoan" sivilization. At that time the island was named "Meropi" |
Next it was the time 1450-1100bc, when Sifnos island was influead by "Myceanean" |
Around the 1130bc "Iones" from Athens colonized the island and they give the name "Siphnos". (Siphnos was th son of Sounios, hero of ancient Attica). Due to her mining facilities, Sifnos becomes a very rich island with its own currency. |
From 146bc to 324ad Sifnos was under Roman rule and occupation. At Kastro as it is from the first places to be built, we can find lots of remains from all those periods. |
During the "Byzantine" period Sifnos passes a quite and progressing time. Also a small period of "Frankish Rule and domination" gives wetsern infuence at Sifnos. |
Turkish occupation finds Sifnos to be goermeded by the commander of the Turkish fleet. Lotsof Churches and Monasteries were built at tha time. Also under the Russian rule Sifnos came between 1770-1774. |
During the revolution against the Turkish occupation, Sifnos took an active part 1821) Since then Sifnos belongs to the Greek territory and until today allways takes active part in the Greek community |
