GREATER CHICAGO SOAP BOX DERBY TAIL WEIGHT FREE RAMPS

As most experienced racers know when it comes to ramp racing it is easy to win if you have a driver who does not weigh in fairly. Experienced racers also know there can be a big distinction between race position and weigh-in position. Both should always be the same, but unfortunately for some it is not. Here in Chicago we tried everything that we could think of from marking the position of the driver while weighing in to taking pictures while on the scales and comparing them while the racer is on the ramps. In 2004 we decided that we had enough so we built ramps that would eliminate that problem. The ramps you see below were built to reduce the possibility of anyone utilizing excessive tail weight to their advantage to win a race.
We allow a maximum of 15 lbs of tail weight, but the winners are rarely if ever at the maximum tail weight. Trying to fudge even more tail weight is not going to help you at all. In fact it will certainly make you slower. These ramps favor a more balanced weight distribution, like most dedicated tracks.

Indoor ramps

Indoor ramps- Angle of the ramp starts off low and increases after the start point. Also notice the angle at the end of the ramps and the red and blue steel sheets to ease the transition onto the track.

Outdoor ramps- Low angle at the start is evident in this picture.
