Greater Chicago Soap Box Derby Race Volunteers |
Each race day begins with all cars being weighed in by Jack Engelke our scale master. Jack ensures that each and every car is weighed in at the correct weight for their division. If a car is either over or under weight Jack helps each racer make the necessary adjustments. Jack has an adult daughter who raced over 5 years ago. |
After registration forms are filled in our crew of timing table engineers feed all the information into our computer system. Pictured from l - r Tom August, Raechel Guererro, Stan Oles, Larry Winters and Jim Dreger. Stan Oles and Larry Winters have both been with our orginization for about 10 years. Even though their children have been out of derby racing for several years they still lend a hand at the races. |
Once the drivers meeting is over and we get a go from our timing table engineers we send the cars to the top of the hill. All racers are givin a friendly welcome by Jim Jedd. After a last minute check of a properly working brake and secure wheels the racers are givin the green light to begin their race. Jim's son was also a racers from several years ago. Occasionally Denny Naples will fill in to give Jim Jedd a break. Denny has a son who was a former racer and they competed against the Jedd family. |
A drivers meeting is held just before racing. All race day rules are gone over and any questioned answered by Tom August our rally director. |
