Running Diablo Off Your Hard Drive
(You will need about 550mb of hd space free for this.)
1.) First find out what version of Diablo you have. Must be the original CD version (v1.00) or patched (v1.02) or (v1.03) (you can find this from the first menu selection in the game)
2.) Install Diablo as normal.
3.) Find the STORM.DLL file in the Diablo installation directory on your Hard Drive. (c:/diablo)
Edit following using you favorite Hex editor (a good one is at the bottom):
For Version 1.0: location 0000C916: Change 74 to EB
For Version 1.2: location 0000CA96: Change 74 to EB
For Version 1.3: location 0000B648: Change 74 to EB (only for Single Player mode. Haven't gotten the Multiplayer code yet.)
4.) Copy the file DIABDAT.MPQ (520Mb) to the ROOT DIRECTORY of any drive. i.e. C:\
5.) Run the program REGEDIT (under windows directory or just use Start then Run)
Once you get into REGEDIT, move down through the tree:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE
Blizzard Entertainment
Archives
6.) Once you open this folder.. on the right side of the panel you will see:
(default)
DiabloCD
DiabloInstall
7.) Just change the "DiabloCD" value by highlighting, selecting Edit/Modify and then just put it where the DIABDAT.MPQ is located.. i.e. C:\
Finally you should then be able to run the game without the CD having to be in the drive.
Good Luck!
This is a good Hex editor that can be used for the above. Just click download to download it.
