The country I come
from is called Bosnia-Herzegovina (Bosna
i Hercegovina). The origins of the name are somewhat
uncertain, although it is widely accepted that the term
"Bosnia" comes from some
ancient personal name. The origin of the name "Herzegovina"
is more certain, as it comes from a German title of
"Herzog" (duke), the title beared by
the duke of Herzegovina, Stjepan, son of a Bosnian king. Bosnia comprises of the northern 4/5 of the entire country. Its slope is lower as you go north. There are mountains rich with ore, coal and other minerals, even with salt. The climate is moderate, with cold, snowy winters and warm but not too hot summers. The main crops are corn, apples, plums and wheat. Herzegovina is the southern part of the country, very dry and stone-covered. There are scarce vegetation and arid mountains, although there are also valleys with fertile fields. The main crops of Herzegovina are tobacco and grape. The climate of Herzegovina is dry and very hot in summer, and cold and windy in winter. As you can see, there are two significantly different regions in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The hydrography of the country presents six big rivers: Una, Vrbas, Bosna, Drina, Sava and Neretva. All of them are afluent of the Danube, except Neretva which crosses Herzegovina and joins the Adriatic sea. Bosnia also has 20 km of the sea coast, at Neum. The most important cities in Bosnia are: Sarajevo (the capital), Banja Luka, Mostar, Tuzla, Zenica and Bihac. MORE INFORMATION
