XTrkCad is a CAD program for designing Model Railroad layouts. XTrkCad supports any scale, has libraries of popular brands of turnouts and sectional track (plus you add your own easily), can automatically use spiral transition curves when joining track and has extensive on-line help and demonstrations. XTrkCad lets you manipulate track much like you would with actual flex-track to modify, extend and join tracks and turnouts. Additional features include tunnels, 'post-it' notes, on-screen ruler, parts list, 99 drawing layers, undo/redo commands, benchwork, 'Print to BitMap', elevations, train simulation and car inventory.

The 3.1 release adds

• Trains will 'crash' if they going 'too fast' and hit another car, end-of-track or an open turnout.
• Dragging off or near the edge of the main canvas can Pan the window.
• Curves can display centers and radius. Track (Turnouts, Helix, Curves) descriptions can be turned on or off.
• Block gaps can be created.
• Zoom buttons can be programmed for favorite Zoom scale.
• Train controller has an Odometer.
• Rescale command on the Tools menu.
• Group command allows more than one track. Ungroup breaks turnouts down into individual segments. The Split command can trim ends of turnouts.
• Plus many other enhancements and bug fixes.

XTrkCad was used for the winning entry in Model Railroader's layout design contest in the March '95 issue.

XTrkCad is listed as one of the three favorite Model Railroad CAD tools in the March '97 issue of Model Railroader.

XTrkCad is available for Microsoft Windows (95/98/ME/2K) and for Linux. The demo-mode program is freely distributable your testing and evaluation. Registration (for a fee) enables the full features of XTrkCad. For full details, see the on-line help with the program.

Note: renaming the file with a longer filename (such as XTRKCAD 32 314 UPDATE.EXE) may cause errors when attempting the installation. Names up to 15 characters (plus the .EXE extension) seem to be ok.
