Japan is without question the most difficult country I've ever travelled too. For me this trip highlighted the benefits of planning! A few hours on the internet and reading Lonely Planet's Tokyo guide saved me a HUGE amount of hassle on arrival - I hate to think what an unplanned trip to Tokyo would be like - very tiring, I'd guess. Having booked all my accommodation I stayed in a Ryokan in Ueno, Tokyo for a couple of nights followed by two more nights in the mountains in Nikko, famous for its Shinto shrines and historic foot bridge. I stayed at both the Turtle Inns here, moving to nicer annex on the second night - I didn't like being kept awake by the owner's dogs barking when they were being left outside in -20 DegC - I don't blame them! The second night I ended up being given a drunken tour of the town by a Canadian interpreter and the local bank managers, before being transported by the managers wife, back to the guest house. A strange evening's entertainment.

I then flew onto Sydney for a few days followed by a visit to my friend Carl(ton) and his wife Ros, in Perth. At the time they lived the aussie dream, having emigrated out there with Carl's job. You get the picture, pool, barbies etc. See the picture below to the right, looks great doesn't it! We also went on a boating trip to Peel inlet just south of Perth - do not drive a boat under the influence ;O) The remainder of the holiday was spent up north on a short overland type trip to the touristy Monkey Mia / Pinnacles (see below) and down south to the more pleasant Margaret river area. There was surprisingly little wildlife in Western Oz or maybe I just went the wrong bits. Okay, okay I must have gone to the wrong bits. A nice relaxing holiday by my standards. ps. I will never fly BA/Quantas cattle class again, if I can help it, talk about cramped!
