What Is 'Space Crusade'?

"Space Crusade" was/is a low-complexity tabletop board game - produced by Milton Bradley, but in collaboration with Games Workshop - in which 25mm miniatures from the Warhammer 40,000 universe are used.  Space Marine squads board a spaceship occupied by agents of Chaos (Space Orks, their Gretchin subordinates, Chaos Marines, Androids, the monstrous Dreadnought, and an occasional Genestealer).  The rules are greatly simplified in comparison with Warhammer 40K or more traditional miniature wargames, so as to make the game more immediately accessible and enhance fun and speed of play.  Consequently, squares are used for location and movement, and there are very basic rules for armour values, strength of attack and defence, line of sight, movement, life points, and so on, and special dice are used to resolve combat.  The game has been very popular in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, Germany (where it was called 'Star Quest') and France, but was not originally released in the United States.  Internet auctions have meant that more and more US gameplayers are becoming interested, and prices of 'Space Crusade' and its expansion sets on auction sites such as eBay are quite high.

What Is 'Imperium Battles'?

"Imperium Battles" is a tabletop game for 25mm sci-fi miniatures from the Warhammer 40,000/Mutant Chronicles and similar universes that we have developed, based on the Space Crusade rules, but expanding them to cover whole-table scenarios, outdoor terrain, vehicles, buildings, and many more types of figures and weapons.  The simplicity of the Space Crusade rules is zealously protected - "no tapemeasures or results tables" is the motto, and fun and relaxing games are the order of the day. Consequently, hexes are used for location and movement (although sometimes squares are still used on particular board sections or terrain pieces), with these hexes largely being supplied by the excellent 'Battlescape' range of terrain accessories from Geo-Hex.

Who is General Freyberg?

Lieutenant-General the Right Hon. Lord Bernard Cyril Freyberg VC, GCMG, KCB, KBE, DSO and 3 Bars, K St J, MiD (5) (1889-1963) was perhaps New Zealand's greatest soldier.  His Victoria Cross was awarded for conspicuous bravery and brilliant leadership (as a Battalion Commander) at the Somme in WW1, and (as Major General) he was the C-in-C of the New Zealand forces in WW2, serving in Egypt, Crete and Italy (at Cassino).  He was also New Zealand's Governor-General from 1946 to 1952. His name was given to the Freyberg Building in Aitken Street, Wellington (the capital of New Zealand), where the founding members of the Battle Group all worked.
