Flashback: The Funks In Japan

Dory and Terry Funk
Dory Funk Jr. 1969.....Terry Funk 1970

Dory Funk Jr. and Terry Funk were the prime movers in letting me become captivated by pro wrestling. When I see The Funks and their matches, I always reconfirm my reason for being a wrestling fan in the stream of the time. I have made my view to wrestling with a lot of memories, which I got through countless live shows. I will never forget about them and my sympathy or telepathy with them.

1969

Dory Funk Jr. and Dory Funk Sr. had their first Japan tour from November 26 to December 6 in 1969 (actually, Dory Sr. had come by Tokyo as a Marine immediately after World War II in 1945).

Terry has retired more than once before. I have attended Terry's two big retirement shows, in Tokyo and in his hometown (he faced Bret Hart at the Tri-State Fairgrounds Coliseum in Amarillo, Texas on September 11, 1997). I know there are bitter opinions against not only Terry's retirements but also pro wrestlers' retirements and quick comebacks in general. Personally, I will be really impressed with it as a professional wrestler's "destiny" rather than be disgusted.

Terry and Dory Funk
The Funks, Yokohama Arena, November 23, 1999

Dory and his wife Marti have held a pro wrestling camp, "The Funking Conservatory / A Fine Arts School of Hard Knocks," since 1999. "Middle-Age Crazy" Terry is still running wild. Two brothers have two different ways. They are really in contrast to each other. I know I can't wish for the good old days (for me) to return. They are two of last ones from the times when a pro-wrestler was respected and hard work was appreciated.
