NEC Microcomputers

Now let's look at the NEC series of microcomputers.

This page has more graphics than most as several models of NEC will be mentioned, so loading could be slow.

I had a chance to use several models of this for development and using the 8" diskettes. I can still remember the loud noises from the disk drive as it acesses the data. This series is much later than the Apple ][, the Commodore and TRS80 discussed previously.

NEC PC8000 series

Specifications of the NEC PC8000 series was as follows:

  • CPU - z80A running at 4 MHz.
  • RAM Memory of 32K or 64K.
  • VDU - usually monochrome, 80 x 24, there are other choices
  • Graphics, poorer than Apple ][, this system was not meant for graphical display
  • Diskette capacity - 143K 8" diskette

    NEC PC8000B series

    Specifications of the NEC PC8000B series was as follows:

  • CPU - z80A running at 4 MHz.
  • RAM Memory of 32K or 64K.
  • VDU - usually monochrome, 80 x 24, there are other choices
  • Graphics, poorer than Apple ][, this system was not meant for graphical display
  • Diskette capacity - 143K 8" diskette

    NEC PC8001mkII series

    Specifications of the NEC PC8001mkII series was as follows:

  • CPU - z80A compatible running at 4 MHz.
  • RAM Memory of 64K.
  • VDU - usually monochrome, 80 x 24, there are other choices
  • Graphics, poorer than Apple ][, this system was not meant for graphical display
  • Diskette capacity - 320K 8" diskette

    NEC PC8800B series

    Specifications of the NEC PC8000B series was as follows:

  • CPU - z80A compatible running at 4 MHz.
  • RAM Memory of 64K.
  • VDU - usually monochrome, 80 x 24, there are other choices
  • Better Graphics
  • Diskette capacity - 2M 8" diskette
