Looking for that Brainwave Called Love?
What parts of our brain make us feel that love "high?" In an attempt to find out, Professor Semir Zeki and his team at University College London recruited 17 young men and women who had fallen in love in the previous six to 12 months. Each had their brain scanned to measure changes in blood flow as they looked at a photo of their loved one. Then they were asked to look at photos of these of their friends, who were the same sex as their loved one.
Amazingly, there was heightened activity in only four areas: Anterior Cingulate, Medial Insula, Putamen, and Caudate Nucleus.
