John Proctor is the one of the main characters in "The Crucible," a story based on the Salem Witch Trials. He is, indirectly, part of the reason why he and 18 others were hanged. John had an adulterous relationship with Abigail Williams, niece of Reverend Parris and a servant of the Proctors at the time. His wife, Elizabeth, "fired" her. Soon after, Reverend Parris caught Abby and her friends dancing (Some of the girls were naked). They claimed that they did this because of the Devil. The girls started naming names, and Elizabeth, was one of the people mentioned. John had to watch as his wife was put in chains and was whisked away to the Salem Village Jail. Since he knew that Abby had to do with this (Abby had told John the truth and that the witchcraft accusations were just an excuse to keep them from trouble), John decided to try to convince the judges that the girls were faking everything so he could free all of the accused and keep his wife from possible death. His servant, Mary Warren, was supposed to tell the judge that Abby and the others were lying, but she turned the tables on John. Eventually he was accused of witchcraft, convicted, and sentenced to death. The day before he was to be hanged, Abby tried to get John to flee the colony, but he refused. Abby ended up running away, partly since she couldn't bear to see John, the man she loved, get executed. The day of the execution, it was Reverend Hale who tried to save his life, but John decided that he'd rather die innocent than be alive because of a lie. Later that day, he was executed by hanging.
