Elastica released their debut album 'Elastica' early 1995.
Annie Holland left Elastica in 1995 because she was fed up with constant touring and not very happy with that certain lifestyle that comes with being in a band. She was replaced by Abby Travis (Beck, Mommy, The Abby Travis Foundation) during Lollapalooza, who left again about a year later because having to travel from the States to the UK and back all the time just didn't work out . She's been focusing on her own career and has joined a new band called Botanica.
No new Elastica releases at that time ...
In 1997 Sheila Chipperfield became Elastica's new bass player and at the same time they recruited Dave Bush (The Fall) as a perminent keyboard player.
Still no new releases. They played some songs for Radio One's Evening Session though, which were 'I Want You', 'Human' (available on 'Dead Man On Campus' O.S.T.), 'A Love Like Ours' and 'The Other Side'.
In 1998, everything got a little weird: Annie Holland re-joined the band, which means Sheila Chipperfield was no longer required as bassist and Donna Matthews left Elastica about the same time 'due to a break-down in both personal and creative relationships'. No one seems to know what Donna's up to at the moment and as far as Sheila is concerned, read the latest news here!
Donna Matthews was replaced by Paul Jones (Linoleum) as guitarist and Mew (Heave) was recruited as additional keyboard player and vocalist. According to official statements, both Paul Jones and Mew are now official members of Elastica. Mew kept doing her thing in Heave as well till the day they split.
The songs on the EP that was released on August 23 1999 were written in 1996/1997 and still feature Donna & Sheila. Their long-awaited second album 'The Menace' was released on April 3 2000. It has some of Donna's recordings on it ('Human', 'Love Like Ours', 'Nothing Stays The Same') too and Sheila played on 'Image Change', 'How He Wrote Elastica Man', 'Human' and 'Love Like Ours' (she wasn't credited for all of the songs though, not very nice).
To be continued ...
