Patrol Leader Checklists

I. GENERAL. The successful conduct of a patrol is the end result of thorough planning, preparation, and the efforts of every patrol member directed toward the accomplishment of the mission. The checklists given here provide the patrol leader with a guide toward analyzing and preparing for the mission.

II. TROOP LEADING PROCEDURE.

A. Begin planning.

1. Estimate the situation/analyze the mission.
2. Plan the use of available time/issue warning order.

B. Continue estimate of the situation.

1. Analyze terrain map, sketch, or aerial photograph for:

C. Arrange for:

1. Movement of unit (where, when, how).
2. Reconnaissance (select route, persons to take along, use of subordinates).
3. Issuance of orders (notify subordinate leaders of time and place).
4. Coordination (adjacent and supporting units).

D. Make reconnaisance (complete analysis of enemy and terrain).

E. Complete plan (confirm analysis preliminary plan/estimate).

F. Issue order.

G. Supervise.

H. Execute the mission.

When analyzing possible courses of action, consider:

V. APL CHECKLIST.

During the conduct of a patrol the assistant patrol leader's function is similar to that of a platoon sergeant. One significant difference is that the APL will normally be in the formal chain-of-command, especially in the case of the unit which has the mission to provide security during movement. The following checklist outlines the normal duties the APL is expected to perform.

A. Actions during movement and at halts.

1. Take action necessary to facilitate movement.
2. Supervise rear security during movement.
3. Supervise the establishment and maintenance of security during halts.
4. Perform additional tasks as required by the PL and assist the PL in every way possible.

B. Actions in the objective area.

1. Assist in th occupation of the ORP.
2. Supervise the establishment and maintenance of an alert system in the ORP.
3. Supervise the maintenance of weapons and equipment in the ORP.
4. Assist the PL in control.
5. Supervise the reorganization and redistribution of ammo and equipment and insure accountability and status of personnel, to include WIA's and KIA's, is maintained.
6. Perform additional tasks assigned by the PL.

C. Actions in a Patrol Base.

1. Assist in the occupation of the Patrol Base.
2. Assist in supervising the establishment and adjustment of the perimeter.
3. Maintain security in the Patrol Base.

a. Keep movement and noise to a minimum.
b. Supervise camoflage and perimeter preparation.
c. Periodically inspect the perimeter and insure sectors of fire are assigned.
d. Insure that designated personnel remain alert, and that equipment is maintained in a state of readiness.

4. Requisiton supplies, water, ammo and supervise their redistribution.
5. Supervise the priority of work and insure its accomplishment.

  1. Maintenance plan.

  3. Messing plan.
  4. Water plan.
  5. Rest plan.
6. Perform the priority tasks assigned by the PL and assist him in every way possible.
