When Utena and Anthy arrive at Touga's birthday party, Nanami is infuriated. She destroys the flowres Utena has brought and rages at her again, asking if Utena is trying to seduce her brother with them. When Touga tries to stop her, she continues on about how he never would have been injured if it weren't for her. When Anthy tries to intervene, Nanami sends her sprawling with a slap in the face.
Touga tries to explain Nanami's irrational behavior to Utena, saying that he has spoiled her and despite all he tries to do to stop her obsession she remains the same. Utena tells him what Miki has said to her, that since he is such a good big brother, everyone else seems worthless. Anthy presents him with a kitten and they seem to enjoy eachother's company as the cat tries to play with Touga's hair.
Nanami walks over and sees them talking and laughing and sees green. She throws a rose at Utena's feet, even at Miki's protests and cries "Big brother is mine alone! Don't even think about backing down!" "Don't you remember the rules, Nanami?" Touga asks her. "Give me your left hand" he says, placing a rose signet ring on her finger. "This is the only thing that will let you fight duels at this academy."
Nanami's overconfidence at the duel is apparent. Having never picked up a sword is no problem, she claims as she has not watched her big brother 13 years for nothing.  I will be happy to get you two away from my brother, always hovering around like insects. Don't underestimate me. She swings her curved sword wildly, almost as if she were swinging a baseball bat and presents a danger to all present.
Her skill level is not very high, but the danger she presents with her wild strikes is more than enough to present a danger to Utena. Touga watches silently from the arena floor, impartialy observing his sister as she duels. "I know everything about him and that includes his sword techniques," she boasts. "This ring I recieved from my prince, and my prince will lead me to victory!"
"No, he won't," Utena promises, recieving the power of Dios in a sudden beam of light. She shreds the rose in a quick flash of steel and light and sends Nanami's sword flying, where it embeds itself in the concrete and says "It's over" in a tired voice. "The fight is just beginning!" Nanami proclaims, drawing a dagger from her uniform. "You can't! Whoever's rose gets scattered is the looser!" Anthy cries desperately.
"I don't care!" she yells, driving Utena against the arena wall. "Give up, Nanami, fighting like this is pointless!" Utena tells her. Nanami seems deaf to this and she grabs her sword out of the ground. As she is ready to embed the blade in Utena's skull, Touga calls "That's enough!" Her aim slips and she hits the wall, breaking the blade. The shattered tip ricochets and slices through the braid in her hair.
"I will win, big brother," she says dully, levelling her broken sword at Utena. "Silly girl, you don't have to fight anymore," Touga says, hugging her. "I'll protect you," "Big brother!" she cries, burying her head against his chest, "I'm sorry, forgive me...". "It's all right, Nanami," he replies. "I guess you can really be a good big brother after all," Utena says, smiling. "I can't ignore a damsel in distress. I guess it's just the prince in me," he concludes.
