Is a Food Dish Necessary?
You will need a small food dish for the first week or two, or at least until your hamster is hand-trained.. Your hamster is making a transition from the petstore/breeder to your home. While he is adjusting to the many changes, he will appreciate his food being in the same spot every day. Also, you will learn how much your hamster eats/stashes every day by watching his food bowl.
Once your hamster is settled in and bonded to you, and you are sure of how much food he needs each day, take the dish out, and begin to scatter his daily amount into different areas of his home. You are now beginning the process of allowing your hamster to "hunt" for his own food from several different locations. It will be fun for him to dig and "scavenge" since it's a natural instinct. This process will become even more entertaining for him later, as the size of his home increases. (Be sure to increase his feedings as he grows.)
As of now, neither of my hamsters use a food dish. In the multi-level houses, (prefererred by syrians) I scatter food in the hardest-to reach places on all the levels. Why? Because hamsters need constant stimulation. I make sure my hams stay busy if they plan to eat. (And believe me- they manage to find and eat it all.) If you and your ham are past hand-training, try removing the food dish. Your hamster will enjoy having to scavenge his own food.
