About your hamster's water supply...
Your hamster will need a water supply at all times. One of the fastest (and unfortunately most common) killers of hamsters is dehydration. It's no secret that I warn against young children having a hamster for a pet, (click HERE for a list of valid reasons) but one of my main concerns is that the parents often forget to remind the child to check the hamster's water bottle daily.
Hamsters do not do well with a water bowl. It quickly becomes polluted with bedding and fur, can be  tipped over, and can soak the cage. Hamsters prefer a water bottle, and easily catch on to using them.
If you buy a petstore cage, more then likely it came equipped with one. If not, you will need to decide what type will be compatable with your hamster's home.
TEST YOUR HAMSTER'S WATER BOTTLE DAILY!!!!
Even with a full water bottle, your hamster could become dehydrated! It's crucial that you test the spout daily (and every time you refill the bottle.)
To test the bottle, make sure it is attached to the cage normally, (it may work in another position but get stuck it it's upright) then put your finger on the spout and rub. Is water coming out? (The tip of your finger should be wet.) If not, take the water bottle out and examine it. Is the ball stuck? (The ball should move freely.)
If you are using a Crittertrail water bottle (the squeazable kind) you may need to give it a "starter squeaze, then try rubbing the spout again.
