PHILIPPE LOMPREZ Interview
By Todd E. Jones of Endorphin Bath for The
Official T21 Web Site
Todd E. Jones of Endorphin Bath: “How Are You?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: "Nice!"
T.JONES: “How did T21 come together? Why and how did you decide to
do the singing?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “In fact, there are 2 members
of the group who met almost easily, with the help of their mother. I’m
speaking’ about myself and Hervé, my brother. For the others, the
hazard of life, while playing music, you meet people. And that’s
it! About the singing... I did it because there was no one else to do it!
Or no one who wanted to do it.”
T.JONES: “What is your favorite T21 album?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “It is the compilation of
the first album and the second called ‘The
First Songs.’”
T.JONES: “Least favorite T21 album?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: "Gohohako."
T.JONES: “What is your favorite T21 song?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Hard question! I guess
none of all! I don't see any for the moment ... Perhaps
‘A Love For A Life’.”
T.JONES: “Least favorite T21 song?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Worst question! None! If
you do something you don't like, you don't do it. Don't you thing so?!”
T.JONES: “What are some of your influences? Singers, musicians?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “For my part ... Kraftwerk
... The Floyds ... P.I.L. ... (thinking ...) That's difficult to
speak about one's influences. Influences are not only musical... I must
think about Platon, who did existed and ... Romero, at the cinema also.”
T.JONES: “Some songs, you wrote the lyrics ... How do you approach
some of the writing in your lyrics? Do you listen to the music first or
do you go into the song with the lyrics already done?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Both! Everything is possible.”
T.JONES: “Height?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “1.72 meter”
T.JONES: “Weight?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “75 ... 80 kilos? I guess,
I don't know really!”
T.JONES: “Eye Color?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Blue, Grey Blue, Changing
Blue ... That's true my eye's color is changing ... It depends on my feeling.”
T.JONES: “Hair Color?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Chatain, light brown...”
T.JONES: “Do you have any phobia?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Vertigo.”
T.JONES: “Drug of choice?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Saint Emilion, I guess
of it!”
T.JONES: “Where would you like to take T21’s music in the future?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Something more ... A little
bit more ... I wouldn't say Techno ... More rhythm…I could say ‘technological
songs’.”
T.JONES: “What does ‘Gohohako’ mean?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “I know it's the name of
an Island, but I can't remember where ... No matter!”
T.JONES: “Did sibling rivalry ever complicate the recording process?
Did you ALWAYS get along well with Hervé, your brother? Did you
have arguments with Herve? What were they about?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “We are fine together! Sometime
there is tension ... We work from our side ... We discuss about the world...
We go in the same direction all together. We need some musician, so we
meet a musician. He or her bring it's stuff to the stuff! One's brings
a brick to construct the wall…”
T.JONES: “Did you ever lend your vocals to other songs or do anything
with other musicians?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “No.”
T.JONES: “What were some of your previous jobs before you were in
T21?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Another of my point of
interest is tropical fishes...”
T.JONES: “What are some of the things you do NOT like?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Bad wines ... What I hate
the most is intellectual dishonesty.”
T.JONES: “Favorite food?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “French Cuisine?! No! I'm
very found of Couscous for instance... In fact, I like the French food
of the south of France.”
T.JONES:
“What LP did you enjoy making the most?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: "Million
lights."
T.JONES: “What makes you angry?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “People that don't respect
their engagements...”
T.JONES: “Smoker or non-smoker?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Non-smoker.”
T.JONES: “What do you think this world needs more of so it can be
a better place?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Humanity.”
T.JONES: “What do you think this world needs less of so it can be
a better place?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Guns, violence...
Poverty.”
T.JONES: “In your life, what do you love the most? Hate?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Always the same question!?
I Love the most... Be myself ... I hate routine and daily constraints.”
T.JONES: “Are you happy in general?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Yes.”
T.JONES: “Who are some of your heroes or role models?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “The unknown soldier.”
T.JONES: “What music would you like to be played at your funeral?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Never thought about that!
If you remember that at that time, play everything you want, but not T21's,
it would be too sad...”
T.JONES: “What would you do if you only had one day to live?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “I would face death, drinking
Champagne.”
T.JONES: “How do you think French people view Americans and how do
you think
Americans view the French?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “In the same time, French
people view Americans as people who contributed to free Europe from Nazis
and also as people who think that the world ends at their land frontiers...
Americans perhaps look at Frenchies as people who spend their time drinking
Champagne and Bordeaux red wine and are particularly boring others with
political discussions... For those who know, that France does exist.”
T.JONES: “In one word, how would you describe France?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “A great land! I'm joking!
I would say ‘beautiful’.”
T.JONES: “Trisomie 21, nowadays, seem to becoming much more new-age
sounding like in ‘Gohohako’.. Is this a sound which you agree with? Will
this be the new direction for T21?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “We try to mix together
machines and soul...”
T.JONES: “What do you do for fun?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “I like to be with friends.”
T.JONES: “As the lead singer, how did you deal with being the center
of attention during live shows?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “I'm not the center of attention
during live shows.”
T.JONES: “Are you married? If so, how did you meet? If not, are in
involved with anyone now?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Private life ... Top secret!
I've being living happiness for eleven years now...”
T.JONES: “What are some of your favorite television shows?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Maybe you don't know that
"show" in the states, cause TV is day in day out ... Here we have a static
image when programs are off ... I love that! Seriously, I prefer ARTE TV
programs, it's a Germane French channel.”
T.JONES: “What are some of your favorite movies?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “I do love the vision of
the world described by the French director Jacques Tati. Humor and Poesy.”
T.JONES: “Out of all the people in the world living today, who would
you like to meet?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “No one especially.”
T.JONES: “Some people say that some of your recordings (‘Works’)
have a ‘Joy Division / New Order’ feel to it… Would you agree? Why? Why
not?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “I agree, but I don't know
why.”
T.JONES: “In the LP 'Plays The Pictures', the city of New York
seems to be a theme (The Billy Idol sample of him yelling 'New York!' and
the song 'Weird New York') and the song 'Million Lights' also has the city
theme to it. What do you love/hate about New York City and what was your
experience within the city itself?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “I like the light and the
verticality of its urbanism.”
T.JONES: “What was it like working on Play It Again Sam Records and
why did you leave?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “It was like working with
a ghost. We left because we do not like ghosts.”
T.JONES: “In the US, T21 seems to have a 'cult' status… How do you
feel about that?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Really!? I'm honored, proud,
though I don't like ‘cult status’!”
T.JONES: “In your later recordings like ‘Gohohako’ and ‘Distant Voices’,
there’s more of a ‘new age’ feel with a large variety of ‘Eastern’
instruments and percussion… What inspired this new sound?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “That work was done on our
way to conciliate machines and soul.”
T.JONES: “What is your sign?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “You mean astrological?
'Balance', Libra in English language...”
T.JONES: “The name TRISOMIE 21 is also known as a chromosome that
has something to do with Down syndrome. Why did you choose to use this
as your name for a group? Did you encounter people who were angered or
offended by this? Do you know anyone with Down syndrome? Is the group now
only known as ‘T21’?”’
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “T21 and Trisomie 21 are
the names under which the group is known. Well. It was an uncomfortable
choice and a politically incorrect one. Our sympathy goes for those people
who are involved with the syndrome. That ‘disease’ gives people a very
strong sensibility, but none was speaking about their artistic sense and
their joy to live life. May be cause it's difficult to share or understand
... Our music is not easy.”
T.JONES: “How and why did you choose the name Trisomie 21?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “For all of these reasons
and with sympathy.”
T.JONES: “Do you believe in God? Are you religious?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “I've never met him ...
He has nether met me. We didn't met together.”
T.JONES: “Abortion – Pro-choice? Or Pro-life?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Pro-Choice.”
T.JONES: “Euthanasia –(Assisted Suicide for the Terminally ill) –For
or against it?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Hard question. Hard to
give an answer. Monday I'm for, Tuesday against ... May be yes, may be
no.”
T.JONES: “Did you ever consider committing suicide?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “ Not really. Is end of
life a happy perspective?”
T.JONES: “Since most of your songs with vocals are in English, how
has the accent in your singing voice been perceived by listeners?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Voice is an instrument,
a tool. Could you ask this question to a computer?”
T.JONES: “As
you look back on your life, what would you change if you could?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Everything. Just to be
assured to live something else, something new, another life.”
T.JONES: “Do you believe in Destiny or Fate?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Yes! Wait... I don't believe
in total (or true, real...) freedom.”
T.JONES: “Did you ever consider working on a solo project or a side
project?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Another brick in the wall.”
T.JONES: “What happened to Lena Kane?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “She is a shooting star,
should she have a good trip!”
T.JONES: “Can you explain the logo of the T21 person with their arms
to their chest?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “’Le repos des enfants heureux’.
It's a cynic joke on youth enrolment.”
T.JONES: “If time travel were possible, what time period would you
like to explore?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Beginning of humanity.
To watch different kinds of human races living together.”
T.JONES: “Why were there less vocals in the LPs in the 90’s?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “We were more interested
in movie music. Illustrate pictures with music.”
T.JONES: “What moment (or album) of T21 are your most proud of?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Not really proud of anything...
Proud to simply exist.”
T.JONES: “Was there a specific time or incident that T21 would have
been destroyed? If so, what made you go on?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “A few hours, when we got
divorced with ‘Play It Again Sam’... Our internal engine did restart with
more energy.”
T.JONES: “How would you physically and emotionally prepare for a
live performance? A Recording Session?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “For a recording session,
I'm easy. I'm nether ready for a live performance!”
T.JONES: “What is the worst thing you ever did for money?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “Nether do anything especially
for money.”
T.JONES: "What are you least proud of?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “This morning, I have been
waking up at 11!”
T.JONES: “What are you most proud of?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “I didn't wake up later!
...”
T.JONES: “What is a typical day like in the life of Philippe Lomprez?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “I wake up to go on with
my job, I do my job. I fight against reality, all day long... And then
I go back home. I go to sleep. Don't you?”
T.JONES: “What is the most defining moment in your career as a musician?
In your life in general?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “The most defining moment
in my career as a musician is when I can't remember lyrics. In my life
in general ... when I can't remember lyrics either!”
T.JONES: “What would you like your Epitaph
to say (or your last words)?”
PHILIPPE LOMPREZ: “No God, no master. Full
Stop.”
