CD: 1990 (BIAS 152) "Our intention is to express emotions so precise and clear as possible with instruments that you would not think suitable for this kind of music. T 21 is the type of band that creates atmospheres and moods and therefore is more interested in composing soundtracks for films than remaining with old traditions." The title of their 1989 album "T 21 Plays the Pictures" refers to their wish to realize that possibility. --- The Lomprez Brothers. Album Artwork: "Plays The Pictures" Front Cover big Version "Plays The Pictures" inside sleeve photos 02:35 Paradise -The movie starts... The electronic mood is set with a dark electronic synth feel and a slow pound of an electronic programmed drum. This short song is slow and without words. It sets the tone for danger, mystery and is strangely named Paradise. Perhaps, paradise is strange..? 01:45 My Year Is A Day - This instrumental sets the tone for the song which follows it. The melody is similar and there is no pounding beat. It's a nice, spooky lead in to One Last Play. I don't know if it's a sample or natural voice, but there is a woman singing "Oooh Oooh." 03:25 One Last Play - This song is amazing. ""New York!" is shouted out in a Billy Idol sample. The beats is slow and the piano graceful. This is a beautiful song! The fluttering in the beginning sounds like birds taking off at the roof of a building in weird New York. This song is romantic and sad because it is about an ending, one last dance, one last play. "Don't look (in) at life in a strange place. It's time for one last dance. What a strange day, it's time for one last play...It's time to stop dreaming.... Emotions must grow... emotions must grow. Don't look (in) at life, sadness is for them. It's time for one last play, it's time for one last play..." This is another which is about an ending where many bands would end an album with but T21 begins their album with the farewell... Another TRISOMIE 21 classic! 02:36 Right To Reply (1)
01:31 At This Time Of Writing (2) -"Let me check his identification!", sampled voice talks on in the background as the instrumental begins. This is a weird song. It's slow like a swing pendulum on a grandfather clock. It almost sounds like twisted Sherlock Holmes looking through the city with a magnifying glass.Great effects and inspiring.... 01:24 Jack In The Box 04:49 Bamboo (1) - The foreign atmosphere is created and the keyboard synth effects create the devastation and dynamic power. Then, a sample of a foreign song is played which sounds really cool. There is this guy singing and a cool guitar in the background. Then, the dramatic keyboards continue to bring a complicated and exotic beat. This song takes the listener into a foreign country or a foreign world. Philippe's voice is nice in this one... Though it's very hard to really understand what he is singing, it's a very beautiful song due to the beat and the melody of the keyboards. "It's a happy ending... No (standing? handling?) alone" 02:38 W.S.W. (West-South-West) 01:34 Brewter's Millions - This is a sexy little instrumental with saxophones. I can picture New York City in the evening... steam comes from the street, cars are driving by and there are people walking around. There's a slight fog in the air... Money 01:24 At This Time Of Writing (3) - This song is the same as the previous version but it doesn't have the guy talking throughout it... It's still cool. 03:14 Dolphin Bay - This song is the same as Moonlight but without the sampled guy saying "Stars" and the driving beat at the end. 02:07 Into The Light Heart 02:35 Right To Reply (2) 02:02 The Secret Beyond The
Door - This is a weird song with a repetitious keyboard sound and wild
effects. Philippe borrows the lyrics from Sunken Lives and there's some
wild vocal effects added. Definitely bizarre.... "Don't love, don't feel,
don't feel..."
02:56 Remember Me 01:30 Bamboo (2) - This is an short, instrumental version of the original Bamboo. This one starts off with a sharp guitar. Then, the same exotic beat comes in along with the atmospheric keyboards.... it's cool. 01:41 Friday Report - This instrumental kicks off with a driving beat and the sound of a... typewriter.. Well, look at the title. The bass drops in and Philippe sings not the word but something that sounds like "How? How?" While this is happening, a sampled voice repeats, "The cage!" 01:41 Ceremony - This instrumental is amazing! It's all sampled strings filtered, played backwards?, I don't know their secret. In stereo, the ethereal melody bounces from the left speaker to the right and back again. The sadness and beauty work together as the mind wanders off... thinking of death, angels, life, passion... a ceremony..(perhaps for Ian Curtis?).. This song is also great to mix into other techno or house songs. 01:45 Cinema Hall 05:31 Take The Shock Away - The first time I heard this song, I didn't think I'd like it as much as I do now. The driving beat starts with Philippe singing, "Whoah-oh- oh-oh -whoah". Then, Bruno plays his exceptional guitar hard and rocks out. This is an 80's song which sounds like an 80's song. This song does grow on me and now, I love it! The idea of shock is sad and beautiful at the same time. Complete chaos in complete stillness is an emotion which I have never heard another band write a song about. This is a T21 pop song and probably could of crossed over with this one. "I drive by so fast, I can't close my eyes. Looking for the truth, trying to explain why. I drive by so fast, no tears in the eyes, take the shock away! Take the shock away!" 01:39 Weird New York - This is the third part to My Year Is A Day and One Last Play. The instrumental melody returns from My Year Is A Day but it's much more spooky. It leaves you wanting more. Then, Billy Idol's sampled voice returns a couple of times hard and sharp.. "New York! New York! New York" Then, a strong heartbeat pounds it way out of the album. It's tense and makes you feel alive. A wonderful way to close a concept album with a New York theme which is also full of imagery and mystery. |
