A&M's official
mascot is Reveille, a full-bred American Collie, whose history goes back
to 1931. At that time, some cadets accidentally hit a black and white
dog in their Model T on the way back to campus. They took the injured
dog back to the dorm, and when the bugler sounded reveille the next morning,
the dog started barking, hence the nickname.
Reveille was adopted by the Corps and the band. She followed them to all formations and led them when they marched. At the first football game, she took the field with the band, and made her first appearance as the official mascot. Reveille died in 1944, and was buried at the north entrance of Kyle Field. Reveille II, Reveille III and Reveille IV are buried there as well. Reveille V retired at ceremonies held at Kyle Field, November 13, 1993. Reveille VI, the current mascot, was donated by Pat Marshall of Plano, Texas. |
