RAHENY VILLAGE

Three stages of christianity in Raheny

.......but you'll still find the odd fir bolg at closing time.

RAHENY lies between Dublin city and the fishing port of Howth just 5mls north of the capital.

We lived on Cill Eanna a street directly opposite the magnificent All Saints church which opened in 1888 on the Howth Rd.

This townland was once known as Ballyhoy.

For many years PJ, the last of the McKenna family originally from Tyrone lived beside us in the crumbling but once impressive Glena Cottage from which I assume the name Cill Eanna is an echo or vice versa.

Some pics from around the village

Our Lady of Divine Grace Church

The Choir Balcony and interior

Opposite the 1960's built Church above is the old St Assans/Assams church built in 1864 and last used for Mass on July 2nd 1962.

It is now a youth club and has been since I was a teenager in the late 60's

To the right of this and shown below is the graveyard and remains of the oldest St Assans church built in 1609

It was built on the site of a 13th century mediaeval chapel.

The "D" shape of the site adds weight to this claim.
