One summers day long ago in the early 1960's I wandered down an almost deserted country lane on the right as you pass The Old Shieling......
.....and found myself in what remained of another world.
A visitor here brought this back to me and suggested I upload a pic of the last remaining thatched cottage on what was and still is Fox's Lane in "Raheny on the Strand", a place now forgotten by all but local historians. Our own village was then known as "Raheny in the Country".
The cottage is shown below as it appeared over 40yrs ago when I believe it was owned by the Cronin family who having witnessed the destruction of eight cottages by a local landlord to facilitate the tramway (early Luas for those who never saw a tram)approached Charles Stuart Parnell for assistance and on his advice took the matter to court and secured the survival of their home.
We are in your debt..
Fox's lane was part of the Howth Rd until 1808 when Telfords built the new one to upgrade conditions as Howth was designated as the Mail Packet Station at the time. This was not to last due to silting and many Dublin notaries complained about the dangers endured en route to the northside harbour.I have to agree here as I went to a disco once in the St Lawrence Hotel and came out with a wife......I rest my case.
Who's for a pint ...I'm going down to the Dolphin.
Pull up a stool at the bar.
D'ye want crips with this?
Or maybe you'd prefer the bar in the Inn.
****Not recommended if you're homesick****
Look away now........
Told ya, but ya had to look did'nt ya.
The Hayes memorial cross in its new location
Of course if you're barred everywhere else theres always that oasis in a sea of "gargle" where footie rules known as The Cedars....right Dominic?
But what night on the batter would be complete without a Macari's
bespoke world famous Batterburger followed by a drag of someone elses Major and a pee down the lane between the Dolphin and McArdles....it's the little things in life that count.....cough!
Theres something about that last paragraph that needs clarifying but I can't put me finger on it.
Question...how come heartburn was'nt invented until after my 40th birthday?
Note to self,"must get a photo of a Macari batterburger"....wonder would they sponsor me?
